The MPB was actually intended to be a Tau project blog when it was launched. I was riding high on all the great work I had seen at ATT and wanted to be part of the conversation. I have no idea how many painters and players that site has inspired, but it is one my favorites of all time. So way back, I started this blog painiting models for what I was calling my Ka'Pow Tau. See what I did there?...

Sadly, it is damn nigh impossible for me to stay focussed on any one thing, and it seems as if it is getting worse. So, after not doing anything with Tau for years, it only seems fitting that it would come back full circle to this post. Let me explain. No, let me sum up. I was having fun with Eldar, minding my own business, then I played against Tau. And suddenly I started thinking back to my Tau. Next thing I know, I am borrowing a friend's army, and then looking through my shed wondering what I even have anymore that is Tau. And from there it only gets worse. Tale as old as time.

So what I had started, at some point years ago, was a Stealthsuit team. It stood to reason, as I friggin' love these models. They had been based in a color I didn't have anymore (Knarloc Green) so I had to redo quite a lot of them. At some point during this process, I decided if I were going to realize another Tau army, I would want it to be three distinct color schemes, though they would share at least one color each. That is why the drones are a different color.

My thinking is:
Suits= Green

Infantry and Drones= Gray (Seen above in drones and Ghost Warrior post.)
Vehicles= Camo. (TBD)

As an aside, I was at a complete loss with what do with the drones, so my default is to make it glow. I like the idea, but I need to work on the execution.

In all, it was fun to revisit the color scheme and the models. Kinda of like riding a bike. I have no idea where the Ka'Pow Tau are now. But at least a little part of them is alive and well in miniatures case at home.

It is seriously my favorite Painter's Blog out there. It is just an awesome collection of beautifully executed futuristic soldiers and armor. I love that his collection is across multiple model lines and scales. It is an awesome repository of sci-fi soldier goodness, and I would love to see his collection assembled.

On top of that, he is seemingly pretty friggin' cool. I sent him an email out of the blue asking about his amazingly painted gray armor, and not only did he send me his color recipe, but his technique as well. Unfortunately for me, David paints with Vallejo Model Color, and no where close to me had it, so I had to do what I could with GW paints. It should also be noted that these guys are not an attempt to duplicate David's work because frankly, I can't, but instead my attempt to honor a painter that has been a huge inspiration to me.

I picked up the Ghost Warriors box set and data slate, as I mentioned earlier. I wanted to differentiate the models in the data slate from my Alaitoc because of the abilities of the data slate. For those who don't know, a cover save provided by the models in dataslate is 4+, and Eldar units within 6" have hatred. Because these abilities are based off models, I wanted the models in the data slate to be obvious. Especially, because I plan to run the data slate with an army of other wraiths, led by a Wraithseer (Well and spirit seer because I have too).

So that all got me here, taking a break from blue to work on some wraiths. I was very pleased with where I landed on this guy. The color is kind of washed out in the pics, because I still suck at taking them. I did deviate from usual basing scheme to something a little more common, just in case I ever wanted to run the dataslate with another army...
I am working on a Wraithlord now, because I want to see the scheme on a larger model. I will get him up as soon as he is finished. In the mean time, one down, seventeen models to go.
Not sure what happened to my before pic, but it looked almost identical to the one in the last post before its refresh.

Anyway, I have read a lot of tutorials on painting yellow. I should also say that I pretty much never paint yellow over a dark base if I can help it. In this case, it couldn't be avoided, so I will take this opportunity to give my own short painting tutorial. Before you even open a can of paint or grab a brush, you need to get to your mind right. Know you will be laying down a lot of coats, as many as it takes, because the trick to yellow is even coats with each color. If you start building on a bad base, it will be bad all the way up. Grit your teeth, thin your paint with whatever medium you like (I used a mixing medium because it kept the paint wetter, longer.) and get started.

Below is a quick pick of what I would call an even coat, vs a base coat with one pass.

In the pic above, I laid down a base of Averland Sunset. That is actually my least favorite yellow I worked with. It is too brown, and dull, and went on pretty globby. So I pretty much just used it as a base for the Yuriel Yellow to go over. In the pic above, the even side was after six coats. That is no exaggeration. Six times through, letting each coat dry totally before applying the next. No wonder pro painters invest in airbrushes.

Once I had my good base, I did about 4 or 5 more coats of the Yuriel Yellow, which is the color I actually wanted:

At some point in the process I had to say "good enough". There is always going to be some patch that is too dark. I liken it to raking grass. You are never gonna get it all. For the final highlights I used Flash Gitz and whatever the Edge color is, I forget, but I really like it. I ended up with the final product seen above. And here is a side shot:

The contrast on this one is quite a bit more drastic than my first refresh. I am happy with this one, and think it is a nice compliment to the more subtle one I posted prior. What do you all think? This one working for ya?

But, and brace yourself because I am sure I am gonna shock the world, my wave serpents have been pretty clutch the last few games I have used them in. That being said, the paint job on the model was good, but I had a few ideas about how I might like them to be. I was explaining to my wife how I was going to paint the next one I got (I only have 2, which is normally plenty.) and she was humoring me by listening. But when I got up this morning, I really wanted to see my idea realized. So I grabbed one of the wave serpents I had and started touching it up. I didn't think to snap a pic until I was almost done with the first black part, but it started out looking like this:
In all, I think it turned out pretty well. I will likely touch up my other one sometime when I feel like painting, but not painting the thing I should be painting.
What do you think? Better, worse?
A lot of this is because I am constantly jumping around with ideas, and if I try to realize it over a number of models, I will change mid stream, and end up with three that are suddenly the "wrong" color. Other times, like I will talk about below, what I am doing is close, but will take a little tweaking. So that even though there is a slight difference on one guy, amidst his squad, you can't really tell. This happened with both of these test miniatures.

Storm Guardian

I make pretty judicious use of Guardians in my army. I like Warlock/Spiritseer powers, and with just a little mojo a cheap unit can become kind of a pain to deal with. I plan to run a full squad of twenty, ten of which are all ready posted on this blog, so I wanted to add some diversity to the unit. In addition...I pretty much friggin' love Eldar corsairs. So with a little mix-and-match from the Wych kit, I have a piratical feeling guardian in a dynamic pose. What I do not have is an Alaitoc camo scheme I like with the new GW paints. This guy came out far too gray for my liking. I am grateful he was a test, as I can alter the highlights a little, and among his nineteen companions, his grayness will get lost unless viewing him up close. Also I did my bone build from a Zandari Dust base, and I am not wild about it either. There is a more yellow quality to this wraithbone vs. my other wraithbone, though in general I need to punch up the whole bone color a lot more.

Dire Avenger

The verdict isn't in for this guy with me yet. On his own, he isn't really setting anything off. That being said, I think as a squad, with the dark armor, and the heavily contrasting bright colors, they will be quite striking. Yet again, the rest of the squad will get a few tweaks, and this guy will be a bit of the odd man out. First off, I am going to tone the gems down a little. I want them to be bright orange, but I need to transition into the color instead of jump. I think I will try a reddish brown as a base and go from there. Second, his armor is really dark. That Drakenhoff Nightshade dries darker then Nuln Oil. I need to just shade with the wash, not bathe the model, or thin it down a little. This guy has a Macragge Blue base, but it is lost in how dark that wash ended up drying.
Well, as you can guess if you follow my blog, I fell short of finishing these guys by the end of 2013. My sauce is weak and my shame is vast. Even still, I did finally get this unit completed with the addition of the last two, one trooper and and the exarch.

I spent a little extra time on the exarch. I wanted something in his coloring to mark him as different. I liked the way the studio often glazed or washed the eldar power weapons with purple, so I kind of ran with it. I did a little purple build on the blades, as well as tried to put a subtle glow effect into his eyes. Kind of like the same power that powers his blades radiates from his helmet as well. Lastly, I used some of the purple on his Warppack. I wanted to keep the markings the squad had, as they represent the shrine, but still make it look more intricate. After reading the Gav Thorpe books I liked the idea of the armor being ancient, and calling to the wearer, so I used more gold to make it seem more elaborate.

In all I am happy with how the squad turned out, although not wild about the time it took. The latter is on me. I need to be a little more diligent and disciplined. I paint slowly, and don't have the means for an airbrush to speed up base coating at the moment, so the only real fix is going to be more time spent with brush in hand.

As to what is next, I am really eager to take on some of my new wraith acquisitions, but I need to finish up a few more aspect warriors, including five Dark Reapers that were given to me last weekend, thanks Brian Haler!.

What do you think of the squad? Is the exarch up to snuff? Does the color scheme communicate what I was going for?
I finally finished three more Warp Spiders in the same scheme as my test model. So I am at 2/3 painted. My goal is to have the squad done by 2014! All I have left is one normal trooper and the exarch. Truth be told, I am not wild about this particular sculpt. It isn't terrible, but it is blocky and static, two things I do not think of when I think of Warp Spiders. Even still, I think they turned out pretty well. I am very thankful to Brian Haler for hooking me up with these guys.
Like, I am sure it is some kind of actual disability. When ever anyone tells me the colors they are thinking of, my mind immediately jumps to what ever professional sports team has said colors in their uniforms. If you tell me your army is green and yellow, and I don't see it, I assume you are fielding the Greenbay Packers. Another side effect is that I can't paint a squad until I have fully realized one model. So, that is what this guy is.

This guy put up a fight. It took me a long time, and a lot of being slowed by analysis to the point of just freezing and not doing anything. That is super absurd in light of the fact that I didn't even have to devise the scheme, since I ripped this straight for the Eldar book. Even still, I liked what I saw, and wanted to get close, though not actually duplicate it.

I was not, and am not still, looking forward to the freehand on this model and his future squad mates. The symbol on the forehead isn't bad, but the warp packs will be daunting. That being said, the end result is nice, and I don't want just big black packs with nothing to draw the eye.

What was a lot of fun was the gun. I had a good time figuring out how to make it "glow".

Hopefully I will be showing the rest of the squad soon.
Just the Everqueen with a staff and head swap. I really liked the idea of her being a Spirit Seer instead of a Farseer because of her bare feet. I like the image of her walking amidst the war torn terrain and feeling, physically and psychically, everything.
His model will always be present, just as an especially dynamic Ranger. Maybe if there is FAQ ruling on his Infiltrate ability, so it is no longer debatable as to whether or not he can bring a squad with him, that he may be worth that hefty price tag. In the mean time the Seeress will make a nice edition to my mind bullet throwing seers. He is a Hogwart's class photo.
How does your local area treat Illic's infiltration ability? What do you think of Spirit Seers?
Well I suppose it wasn't needed, but it is worth Appearance points, or a point, or something. I have never really made a display board before, so this would be my first foray into the display board world. Also, I am a crap carpenter. I can't draw a straight line with a straight edge, let alone cut straight. And I don't have an extensive tool collection either. Pretty much just my hobby tools, a tool set we got for our wedding, and like, a screw gun.

What I wanted in a display board was pretty much a place to hold my army as I moved from table to table, as well as that giant friggin tome that is the rule book. I have seen people make shelves or drawers in their display board, and I wanted to do something like that. But alas, limited tools and crap carpentry skills were going to be an obstacle. Cue MacGyver music.

This is where I started. A letter basket, a pice of beveled bass wood, some dark stain, and Gorilla glue. All said and done like $36 in supplies. Though the letter basket in the picture is actually to replace the one I had one my desk at work.

After acquiring my supplies, the first thing I did was tape off the edges of the bass wood that would serve as my display board. After that I covered the top of the display board with white glue mixed with water, then dumped concrete aggregate on top. After the white glue and water mix dried, I shook the excess concrete aggregate from the board and painted on a base layer. Between the glue and the paint, I figured the aggregate would be affixed well enough that I could do other work.

Next, I took the letter box from my desk and gorilla glued it to the bottom of the display board. What I forgot to do was stain the bottom of the display board, so there is that. I had to go in and paint around the the letter box after the fact. Even still, after setting the letter box how I wanted it, I piled a moderately heavy box on top. I let it sit over night to really solidify the bond between the display board and the box. The next morning I tested it...

So far so good.

After the stress test it was just a matter of dry brushing and washing the top of the display board to make it match the basing on my miniatures.

Lastly, a little stain on the sides, and once that dried some static grass for the display board.

And there ya go. The letter box serves as legs for the display board and a handy place to hold the tome of 40k, army lists, and a codex. As with anything, if I made another I would do things differently, mainly I would get a bigger board, as displaying my brawl army on this makes for a pretty crowded house.

Live and learn. This will be great for the end of the month, and I had fun doing it. The effect, for the effort, pays off. Outside of a lot of waiting for things to dry, the process was simple and fast.

What do you think? What do you use to display your army at tournaments?
Sadly, I only thought to snap pics of one, because I fail. While both Brian, and Magnus play different armies, it was cool because the spirit of their armies was very similar.

Brian ran a wagon and truk'ed up KoS list. It was fantastic, and nostalgic in its appearance and feel. Just bright red vehicles and yellow flames everywhere. He got first turn, motored all the vehicles forward. I had a one turn to open up his well, everything. I didn't, his boys got out, Waaarrghhh, and I slowly got caught up in the green tide. Brilliant!

Against Magnus (Those stunning space wolves in the pics are his, better pics at his blog.) I gave him first turn. And down came the pods and Greyhunters! I once again found myself in a situation where I had one round of shooting, and if I didn't get what needed to get dead dead, then I was in for a world of hurt. The elves got it done this time, although we never did get the Landraiders dead. Another awesome game, creating a feel on the table that closely mirrored what I have read about in the 40k universe.

Two totally enjoyable games with very different outcomes. Thanks so much to both Magnus and Brain! I will take pics of Brian's orks next time, as they are really quite cool.
He is a special character for Alaitoc, and the uber ranger at that. I fell in love with Alaitoc back in the days of the Ranger Disruption Table. And not because of the rules, though they sure didn't suck, but because I loved the idea of the scout/sniper, and an army of them was like christmas.

This model was pretty straight forward to paint. I painted him up in the color scheme of my other rangers so he fit in. Although I tried to make his coat a little more elaborate. I am still pretty rusty in a lot of areas, but this guys was a lot of fun as return. I will be fielding him a lot, rules be damned! Not that I think he sucks or anything, I am just saying, he will be present. That being said, I will likely not upgrade my rangers to pathfinders very often. If Illic joins normal rangers they get Stealth and Shrouding, so I will take the cheaper points values and better cover save over everyone making precise shots.

Here is a quick shot of Illic with his rangers.

Would you run pathfinders vs. rangers? What do you think of my base vs the sculpted base he is normally on?
Awhile back my buddy Magnus gave me some miscasts of some club objective markers he was selling. He cast them out of resin, but that is about all I know about where they came from. They have our game club logo, and look bad ass, so they got some paint. Can't wait to slap these down at the The Brawl.
Finished up this warlock last night. He had been sitting around for awhile, as I got it when I got the Farseer I painted almost a year ago. I am not wild about the Finecast products, but I have heard they are getting better. There may be some truth to that, as the first Finecast model I got that didn't irritate me was Nightspear. He is far and away better than the Finecast Swooping Hawks. The thought of them threatens to launch me into a vitriol-feuled diatribe on crap-tastic Finecast kits, but that is not what we are here to talk about.

This guy was pretty straight forward. I am always a little gun shy of light colors like yellow and white, and this guy had an ample supply of both. That being said, it wasn't so bad. The new GW line has a slew of light grays, whites, and off-whites. Though I have yet to find it exactly, I sure there is a solid build among the aforementioned. The yellow I am not as sold on. There is something about the old Golden Yellow, maybe because it has just been my go-to yellow for so long, that I was missing on this guy. However, I do appreciate that the Flash Gitz Yellow is less lemony in color than Bad Moon Yellow was.

As far as the model, it is not one of my favorite warlock sculpts. With the rules change to witch blades I am not sure about singing spears, so this was the only warlock I had that was carrying a witch blade. I always thought the way this guy was holding his witchblade was goofy, more, "Check out my sword brah," than "Engarde!" Also it makes the model kind of hell to store. I don't mean to sound all negative, even the least cool Warlock is a pretty great model. I really like the fur mantle he has, though with my version painted blue I kinda feel like he is wearing Cookie Monster's pelt. In addition, I really like the art piece I think the model was made after.

I tried a glowing effect around his eyes, which you can kind of see below. Pic isn't great because I still can't figure out how to take good close up pics with my wife's new camera. I think I will go with a little more Lhamian Medium next time to thin the Temple Guard Blue, and then apply the glow in a few more thin coats.

What about you, Distinguished 44 (Followers)? What do you think of the Warlock model? What build are you using for your whites? Wanna beat the dead Finecast quality horse? Do you happen to know how to work my wife's camera. Sound off in the comments.
Just a quick note. As I said in a earlier post, I needed to change it up from Dark Angels. So I started on this model I had lying around. I was surprised at how quickly this miniature went. It looks a little less clean then most of my work, but it was also done really quickly, especially for me. In all I am very happy with the trade off, as all said and done this was like a five hour model.

With him complete I have 2 troops and an HQ for my Alaitoc models as well. So I can now field the two tiniest armies ever, although fully painted!
I will be the first to tell you that I am really disappointed that it took me so long to finish these five miniatures. It is all on me, as there were nights where I didn't follow Picasso's advice, often obeying the voice inside telling me not paint.

It felt good to put this squad behind me. I have done a lot of green lately and am looking forward to taking on something else. That something else being Ravenwing, specifically an attack bike. Working in black has always been a challenge, so I am eager to under take it. Until it pisses me off...

But back to the tac marines. Here is a close up of the Sarge:

From Stuff I Have Painted: Space Marines

Already having one bald sarge, with this guy I attempted to create an effect of closely cropped hair to break it up a little. It met with moderate success, but unless you get up close it just kind of looks like light spot on top of his head.

From Stuff I Have Painted: Space Marines

And here is a quick shot of the whole 2nd Tactical together:

From Stuff I Have Painted: Space Marines

Lastly, for the first time in like 5 years I do, technically, have a painted 40k army. It is only like 840 points, and would get clobbered, but min force org is met. It is a small victory I am going to take. So my take on the 5th company up to this point:
I have enjoyed working on my Dark Angels as I learn this edition. It can be said that it is a continued labor of love and patience. Not only because I paint slow and must fight the urge to jump from project to project as usual. But also because I have been getting my head kicked in with them. I think in nine games of 6th Edition I am like 2-7. And maybe only two of those losses were close. Most of the games have just been me getting pummeled. I am sure that all of that speaks more to me as a player than the codex. Also I don't really talk tactics here anyway. I am super eager for a new codex for my beloved Dark Angels. Perhaps some new tricks will be exactly what I need to discover my inner tooth-chipper.

I did pretty much the same thing with these guys that I had for the Assault on Black Reach set. I had been advised that my bases were kind of plain and one dimensional. In order to fix that I added some tufts of grass, in addition to the normal static grass mix I use, to add something different visually. I think I will go a step further and add some large chunks of debris to the next batch.

A canny-eyed reader might notice that these are the tactical marines from the Battle for Mac Cragge set. I promise my army will consist of models other than those in the boxed sets. It probably just won't seem like it for awhile, as I am super eager to tackle the rumored models coming out in the 6th Edition starter box. That box has me incredibly excited, as it will contain new Dark Angels models if the rumors are true. Something not seen for like five years. At least I can use quite a bit of the marine stuff that has been coming out in that time as it looks great.
Nothing says anti-climax like crap photography. Try as I might, I just couldn't get a good group pic with the lighting rig I have. Anyway, now is not a time for negativity, nay it is a time of joy! You see, I actually finished something I said I would do. Granted, seventeen models isn't exactly worthy of a medal or anything, but it still feels pretty cool. And just in time for the next half of a starter box to boot.

I do the majority of my 40k blogging over at Still Practicing, however I felt it only appropriate that this end where it begun. So I finished up the dred. And since he has been painted I think he has lived about 3 turns (Hull points, wah wah waaahhh.) Even still, I had a good time painting him, as I have alway loved dreadnoughts.
Still cracking away at the clan rats. Doing a couple ranks this time. My intent is use every brown and most of the grays I have on these rats. I am just kind of grabbing handfuls and laying down the fur tone I want to work with at the moment. I didn't get as far as I would like with these guys by today, but some of that is because I used some of my painting time for Dust Warfare.

In trying to lay down the base for these rats I have found that, because I am using snow flock, if I go too light on the dry brushing of the sand, it tends to not add enough contrast. Everything kind of blurs together is a mass of dull light-color and am white. That being said, I am not sure I am bringing the color up high enough, and struggling to find the happy medium. Until I get something I like better, I am basing the sand with VGC Charred Brown, followed by a dry-brush of VGC Earth, and finally another dry-brush of VGC Cobra Leather. This color progression is illustrated in the photo below, going from right to left.

While I was waiting for the initial coat of Charred Brown to dry before dry-brushing I went ahead and started blocking in the base color for this grip of rats fur. I also started laying down the flesh-colored parts on a few of the rats before I ran out of time.

The running out of time part is tied into me taking my usual painting time to get my second game of Dust Warfare in. I wasn't in a huge hurry so we played a big 300 point game, wherein I am sure rules were butchered, misread, or ignored out right. I really like the Dust rules set, and the models remind me of playing with the plastic army men I got in a bag when I was younger. I am extremely enamored of the SSU, as I have always been a huge fan of heliocopters, probably based on the countless hours of Airwolf my older brother subjected me to.

Which leads me to my only point of contention with Dust. I need more stuff from them, specifically the rule book to play the faction I want to play. It is almost like the reverse of GW, where they have given models for the game but not rules. I can't decide which is more consternating. I fear that for Dust to really get legs with my local play group there needs to be more options than "either or", and really the only games I have seen do well with the folks I play with had at least four factions.

In the meantime, David Morris has been nice enough to let me use his models, and has been an excellent teacher. My SSU guys sit ideally by until they have rules and I can start zooming over the table with my choppers, Airwolf theme blaring in my head. Oh, and after grabbing this bad boy I will at least know the basics for when it is that glorious time:
Over the Memorial Day Weekend my younger brother and I decided to pick up the Island of Blood set and learn how to play Warhammer Fantasy Battle. My vitriol toward that product has diminished over time, although I will say, despite any information given by Games Workshop or unscrupulous game store owners, you cannot in fact a play a game of fantasy from that box. Despite that major let down, my younger brother rolled a die, unable to choose between rats and elves, and ended up with the High Elves.

Admittedly this had me concerned. I paint so slowly that the notion of doing a horde army almost killed any chance of me getting into Fantasy before it began. But, despite a couple of set backs, we still were (are) waiting for the new 40k rules, and didn't see a whole lot of point in playing another battle under 5th.

We did muddle through a game after getting some army books, and had a great time. In the few games we have played he continues to hand me my butt (Stupid griffon!) but there is also a fairly large points disparity between the two forces. We are enjoying ourselves immensely, and have decided to attempt to put paint to our forces, at least for the time being.

This actually works out well. In just one short week it will be all 40k all the time in my local play group, and I am sure I will catch a learning game or two, however I am content to sit back. An entire edition of 40k has come and gone, where the army I love most, Dark Angels, sat with sup-par rules and didn't even get a new model. To say that I am ecstatic that Dark Angels are rumored to be featured in the starter box, as well as one of the early armies to be released is an understatement. But even still, I think I will save my enthusiasm for when it actually happens. I am OK being a little late to the 6th Edition party, and love the idea of starting off with a new book and new models.

In the interim, rats, and plenty of them. My brother and I have decided not to get any more models until we have finished what we have, which is the stuff in Island of Blood. He has a let less models than I do, so I needed to get cracking. Also I will tire of getting griffoned to death every time we play, so I will want to start padding out my ranks and getting some more pointy-teeth and claws on the board. I needed to start slow, so I just did one rank, well kind of, I will probably have no idea who all goes where when it is all said and done.

The models themselves actually paint up fairly quickly. And I struggled with not over complicating them. They still took a fair amount of time, because I wanted to add some extra touches like the glowing eyes and all the rust. I want my have my rats feel like you could get lock-jaw just looking at them, but didn't want to over do it so they looked like blogs of red-orange. I went with the snowy bases because I have had the flock lying around forever. Also, having been through three long winters where I live, I am beginning to equate winter and snow with a certain degree of misery, apropos for Skaven.

There are some techniques on the snow flock that I need to improve on and refine. I also need to find the setting on this new camera that makes the pics a lot less yellow. But this is the start of one of my rat squads, packs, nests? I have no idea...

If there is interest I would be glad to do a tutorial of how I did them, although the next group I do will have lighter fur.
Well not for a month or so, however there will be no new content. I don't post frequently enough to justify my own blog so I have joined forces with my friend at his blog, still practicing_. If you follow me here, please follow me there as well. It should be better for all, and really my work there is going to be exactly the same as it is here so there shouldn't be too much of change.

Thanks to all who hung out with me here! Now shoot over to SP and check seven more Bad Moon slugga boyz!
Even still, I was able to make some progress on the small batch of boyz I have been working on. Painting seven models at a time is seeming rather daunting, which doesn't bode well for my intended push of 20 models at a time for the next mob. I will move up gradually one more time before taking the bull by the horns.

One nice thing about building models is that I can be far more mobile in doing it than when I paint. I was able to cobble together the Nob squad I wanted to run, largely in part to a generous donation of kombi-shootas from Brian Haler. They were assembled almost entirely during the viewing of Burn Notice with my wife, via Netlfix's streaming service.
I liked the idea of my Nobs being shooty rather than chopp because there is a very heavy shooting element to my ork army. Furthermore it seems to fit in alright with the Bad Moons theme. I had a great deal of fun putting together my Pain Boy, Dr. J. G. Matthews, OMD. Although not a very orkish name, it?, he? does take his/its namesake from a very generous and incredibly inspiring person who has made this ork project possible. Dr. Matthews, so enamored of the way Space Marine apothecaries are able to heal the Angels of Death, he has decided to emulate them, in order to better patch up his boyz.
Not bad for my slow-painting ways. I would hope that that with practice I can get it down to less than 2 hours a model. The build on the black parts/pants went rally quickly, as I just highlighted it up with a mix of khaki, followed by straight khaki. I have already started on the next group.
I played in a team tournament this last weekend with Tallarn from Still Practicing. It is always a good time playing with or against him. The game table at my house has developed something of a reputation for hating me, well specifically my dice. I am not much of a believer in bad dice. They happen, so do good dice. You will pretty much see what ever you are looking for, luck wise, if your are in the frame of mind that your dice are good or bad. Furthermore, I have a little bit of a dice obsession...

I am sure there are people who have many more. But I have my fair share. I refuse to believe that they all suck on my table. Even still, Tallarn was unwilling to risk my multitude of "bad dice", or the off chance that it was just my table that hated me. When I arrived he handed me these:

I was confused but enthusiastic. I mean they were dice, and I always need more dice. But, according to Tallarn, these dice were unlike any I had, outside of color/design, because these dice were blessed. To hear him tell it, no kidding blessed. Like they were purchased in Germany and blessed at a Belgian monastery before being sent over to him. I am not sure on the logistics, but either way it was pretty awesome.

So how did the blessed dice work? Friggin' awesome! Our poor turn two opponents could only shake their heads as I rolled ten "5ups" on twelve dice. Be it divine, or the fact that is was all BS and I just had the plastic cube equivalent of Dumbo's feather, the dice were going crazy. I am a firm believer in averages, so to anyone out there who rolled a lot of crap this weekend, I am sorry. I was riding the high side of the curve. Thanks for taking one for the team and riding the low side of the curve in order to keep the universe in balance.

Tallarn and I didn't win. We were five points out or something, though I still got a prize.
Just the black areas left. I am not sure I am sold on the yellow, weird I know. I really like the color, but I may try working the tone something brighter and warmer. The real hurdle was whether or not I could pull off a quick weathering technique I envisioned and be happy with?

A canny viewer will notice that the sword choppa looks wonkey, weathering wise. That was where I started, and I realized I was doing the technique backwards. Pro, I know. After I got my mind right I was able to accomplish what I was trying in a short amount of time. Hoping it will get better with practice, but it suffices for now.
